The Bears have been busy since the start of the new league year last Wednesday, trading for receiver DJ Moore and signing nine free agents.
They've earned high marks for their acquisitions from several NFL analysts. Here's a sampling of the grades they've received for some of their moves:
Jeff Diamond, 33rd Team
DJ Moore, receiver
Grade: A
Comment: Moore fortifies Chicago's passing attack for Justin Fields and will start opposite Darnell Mooney. From Chicago's perspective, there is a reasonable chance that Carolina's first-round pick in 2024 could be a top-10 pick.
T.J. Edwards, linebacker
Grade: A
Comment: The Bears are tapping into their excessive cap room to sign the Eagles' leading tackler last season. Edwards had 159 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, seven pass break-ups and two sacks. He should have a seamless transition from Philadelphia's 4-3 defense to the similar scheme of Bears coach Matt Eberflus.
Tremaine Edmunds, linebacker
Grade: A-
Comment: The Chicago Bears continue to re-make their linebacker corps with the signing of Tremaine Edmunds, the Buffalo Bills' No. 1 pick in 2018 who is a two-time Pro Bowl pick and has five straight seasons with over 100 tackles, That includes last season when he had 102 tackles despite missing four games with a groin injury … The Bears have signed Edmunds and T.J. Edwards, who can both play middle or weakside linebacker in Chicago's 4-3 defense. It will be a smooth transition for both players since they played in a 4-3 at their previous teams. Edmunds also is good in coverage so he's an every-down 'backer.
Nate Davis, guard
Grade: B
Comment: Nate Davis was a third-round pick of Tennessee in 2019 and is a four-year starter who helped pave the way for Derrick Henry's great success as a two-time league rushing leader. Davis moves well and was one of the top guards available in free agency. He should be an excellent run blocker for the Bears top-ranked rushing attack, and he's improved as a pass protector which is where Justin Fields needs help.
Vinny Iyer, Sporting News
DJ Moore, receiver
Grade: A+
Comment: The Bears made full use of the Panthers' desperate trade up for the No. 1 overall pick to get Justin Fields a much-needed No. 1 go-to wide receiver all over the field.
T.J. Edwards, linebacker
Grade: A
Comment: GM Ryan Poles started his big spending by working to shore up the second level post Roquan Smith. Edwards is just one of many key defensive holes the Bears will fill.
Tremaine Edmunds, linebacker
Grade: A
Comment: The Bears have rebuilt the middle of their defense in a couple moves with more active playmaking overall. Edmunds and T.J. Edwards provide a big 1-2 punch upgrade.
DeMarcus Walker, defensive end
Grade: A
Comment: The Bears get some cheap versatile pass-rush pop for their rebuilding defense, too.
Get an exclusive look inside the Bears' practice facility as new Bears DJ Moore, Tremaine Edmunds, T.J. Edwards, DeMarcus Walker, Nate Davis, Travis Homer and P.J. Walker tour the building, meet their new teammates and more during their first days in Chicago.
Mike Jones, The Athletic
T.J. Edwards, linebacker
Grade: A
Comment: The native of Lake Villa, Ill., who grew up idolizing Brian Urlacher, now will anchor the Bears defense after a season in which he racked up a career-high 159 tackles (99 solo, 10 for a loss) for the Eagles.
Tremaine Edmunds, linebacker
Grade: A
Comment: Chicago's intentions of improving its defense are clear. The Bears opened free agency by adding T.J. Edwards from Philly. Now they get the highly coveted Edmunds, who was No. 8 on The Athletic's ranking of free agents (and No. 2 linebacker), to further fortify their defensive front. Boasting great size (6-5, 250) and athleticism, Edmunds makes plays all over the field whether against the run, as a pass-rusher or in pass coverage.
Nate Davis, guard
Grade: B
Comment: Continuing their aggressive approach, the Bears address their offensive line as well. When healthy, the former Titan and No. 2 guard in The Athletic's free-agent rankings played at a Pro Bowl level. But injuries slowed him in 2021 and 2022. If he can return to his top form and remain on the field, Davis will improve a line that surrendered 58 sacks last season.
Robert Tonyan, tight end
Grade: B
Comment: The Bears continue their efforts to improve Justin Fields' supporting cast, adding a divisional rival in Tonyan on a one-year deal.
Seth Walder, ESPN
DJ Moore, receiver
Grade: B+
Comment: In a single trade, the Bears accelerated their roster turnaround and will be able to help quarterback Justin Fields. Credit general manager Ryan Poles for being willing to trade down all the way to No. 9 to gain extra value. Too often teams end up getting married to where they are slotted and not wanting to deviate far from that spot. The Bears walked away with far, far more out of this deal than the No. 1 pick was worth to them. I also really like that the Bears were able to pry Moore from the Panthers … He fills a crucial need, one that was not going to be easily filled in free agency given the weak receiver class.
T.J. Edwards, linebacker
Grade: A
Comment: This is a steal for a highly productive off-ball linebacker in the prime of his career. The 26-year-old Edwards' numbers were excellent across the board for the Eagles last season, as he allowed 0.6 yards per coverage snap, the eighth-best mark among linebackers with at least 250 coverage snaps, per NFL Next Gen Stats. He also ranked seventh in run stop win rate among linebackers and had a strong 38% pass rush win rate in a small sample.
Walter Football
T.J. Edwards, linebacker
Grade: A+
Comment: The first signing during the 2023 free agency period is a slam dunk. When I saw that the Bears immediately agreed to terms with T.J. Edwards, I was concerned that they highly overpaid. That is definitely not the case. This is a great price for Edwards, who has quietly become one of the top off-ball linebackers in the NFL. Edwards will be a huge, yet cheap upgrade to a position vacated by the trade of Roquan Smith. Linebacker was already a need with Smith on the roster, so this is just the beginning of the defensive rebuilding process for the Bears.
Nate Davis, guard
Grade: A+
Comment: It's not often that I'll give an A+ grade to a contract averaging $10 million or more per season. There are exceptions, however, and this is one of them.
I love this signing. Davis is one of the top guards in the NFL, and he's only 26, so getting him for "only" $10 million per season seems like a great bargain to me.
Travis Homer, running back
Grade: B+
Comment: The Bears just lost David Montgomery to the Lions in free agency, so they needed to find a replacement. They still need to do so in the wake of this signing, though the player in question will have an impact in 2023.
D'Onta Foreman, running back
Grade: A
Comment: This is a great signing for the Bears, who just lost David Montgomery. There's not much of a difference between Montgomery and Foreman as runners, yet Foreman will be making much less in 2023.
Andrew Billings, defensive tackle
Grade: A
Comment: This is a solid move by the Bears. The 311-pound Billings has done a good job of stuffing running lanes, so he should handle that role well in Chicago.
