Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of email questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.
I read something late in the season about how the Bears can't negotiate with Josh McCown until the start of free agency in March because of the contract he signed last year. Is that true?
Kyle T.
Oak Lawn, Illinois
No, that's not true. Because Josh McCown signed a one-year minimum salary benefit contract with the Bears in 2013, he cannot sign a multi-year extension or another minimum salary benefit deal until the start of the league year on March 11. But the Bears can negotiate with him at any time before that (including right now). It's also important to note that they are the only team that can talk to McCown before March 8, when a three-day window begins during which clubs can negotiate with players who are due to become unrestricted free agents on March 11.
I would like to congratulate Kyle Long on being added to the Pro Bowl. I think the honor is well deserved. When was the last time a Bears rookie was voted into the game?
Roger W.
Indiana
Kyle Long is the first Bears rookie to be selected for the Pro Bowl since Johnny Knox went as a kick returner in 2009. Interestingly, the last Bears rookie to be voted to the Pro Bowl at a position on offense was running back Gale Sayers way back in 1965.
How many former Bears players will play in the Super Bowl?
Wayne B.
Stevens Point, Wisconsin
I'm not sure if they will be active, but tight end Kellen Davis and receiver Ricardo Lockette are both on the Seahawks' 53-man roster. Davis had three receptions for 32 yards and one touchdown in 15 games this season, while Lockette caught five passes for 82 yards in eight contests. There are no former Bears on the Broncos.
