Did Packers avoid Jaylon Johnson? | Chalk Talk

Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson
Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.

So far Jaylon Johnson has been seeing very few targets. Is that good for a cornerback? Is it a fluke or is he just playing very well?

It's hard to make any judgment on the season opener against the 49ers because the game was played in a monsoon. But in last Sunday night's contest in Green Bay, it was very clear that Aaron Rodgers was targeting untested rookie Kyler Gordon, who lined up in the slot most of the time but played outside on occasion as well. Rodgers also targeted third-year pro Kindle Vildor to a lesser extent. But it was obvious that the future Hall of Fame quarterback, who is as good as anyone I've ever seen at recognizing and taking advantage of favorable matchups on the field, knew that he'd have better success against other cornerbacks than Jaylon Johnson, who is unquestionably the Bears' best player at that position. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Johnson was not targeted in coverage for the second consecutive game and has gone 61 consecutive snaps without being targeted, a streak that dates back to Week 18 of last season.

Have you heard anything from Luke Getsy about getting Cole Kmet and Darnell Mooney more involved in the game early? Our top two receivers have a combined two catches for two yards in four games.

Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy only speaks to the media on Thursdays, so he has yet to be asked about or discussed getting the ball more to receiver Darnell Mooney and tight end Cole Kmet since Sunday night's loss to the Packers. Coach Matt Eberflus was asked about it Monday as you'd expect and he agreed that the offense will only be successful if the Bears get Mooney and Kmet the ball, saying: "We need to highlight our skill. We know that. So we're going to try to do a better job of that. We will do a better job. We've got great coaches. Those guys are smart. They know how to get it done and we will get it done."

How much longer until Lucas Patrick takes the center position and leaves Teven Jenkins the full-time starter at right guard?

I'm not sure how quickly we'll know, but based on coach Matt Eberflus' comments Monday at Halas Hall, it appears that the offensive line is trending in that direction. When Eberflus was asked whether Lucas Patrick and Teven Jenkins would continue to rotate at right guard like they have in the first two games, the Bears coach said that it depended on what Patrick could do with his injured right hand. That made it seem like Patrick would play center when he's capable of snapping the ball. Eberflus added that they would know more after practice Wednesday and Thursday, but I doubt the Bears will announce who's playing where this week and we'll just have to wait and see Sunday when the Houston Texans visit Soldier Field.
