Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.
Every year during camp there seems to be a fan favorite that emerges, like Rodney Adams last year. I feel like that player is Jack Sanborn this year. What do you think his chances are to make this roster, and from what you've seen in camp does he appear to have the tools to contribute with the starters?
Greg C.
DeKalb, Illinois
I think undrafted rookie linebacker Jack Sanborn has an excellent chance to make the final roster as a special teams contributor and valuable backup on defense. He showed his playmaking ability in last Saturday's preseason opener, generating a pair of takeaways with an interception and fumble recovery and two special teams tackles. I expect the Lake Zurich High School product to get many more opportunities to prove himself in the final two preseason games, and I certainly wouldn't be surprised if he emerges as a top special teams player this season.
I noticed that Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy was down on the sideline and not in a coaches box for the preseason opener against the Chiefs. Do you know if he plans to do that all season?
Bob P.
Darien, Illinois
Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy told reporters Monday that he plans to coach from the sideline during games this season. It enables him to have a better feel for the game and communicate with players face-to-face. Said Getsy: "There's just a comfortability of being on the field. There's a look someone in the eye, have a conversation with them, get to see what they really feel when you're asking a question. You can have great conversations with everybody on offense, not just the quarterback. And I think that I'm a 'feel' person. Shoot, when I play golf, if I can't see it, it gets ugly. But if I can see it and feel it, it goes pretty good. I'm the same way with this game. I like to see it and feel it and I feel like I see the game, honestly, better from the field."
Of all the receivers in training camp, who will be the Bears' No. 2 receiver?
Benjamin B.
Chicago
It appears that the top two contenders for the No. 2 receiver spot behind Darnell Mooney are Equanimeous St. Brown and Byron Pringle. St. Brown has impressed the Bears in training camp, but Pringle remains out with an injury. So we'll have to see when he's able to return to action. In the meantime, rookie Velus Jones Jr. is expected to make his preseason debut Thursday night in Seattle, and if Tajae Sharpe continues to perform like he has in practice and in the preseason opener versus the Chiefs, he'll also contend for that position.
