Rome Odunze seeing preparation, hard work 'come to fruition'

Rome Odunze was due for a breakthrough performance heading into the Bears' Week 3 contest in Indianapolis. Throughout his first two weeks of NFL action, the rookie receiver began to feel himself processing the game at a quicker pace.

Odunze's showed off his natural abilities, such as his speed and football IQ, along with his knowledge of the playbook en route to his first 100-yard NFL game.

"I love preparing during the week and finally seeing those things come to fruition when it comes to game time," Odunze said. "It reassures you that the work you're putting in and the things that you're doing during the week are going to provide success for you during Sundays."

Odunze and fellow rookie Caleb Williams connected six times for a game-high 112 yards and a touchdown against the Colts, more than doubling Odunze's production in the first two weeks (44 yards).

Following his first highly productive NFL game, Odunze felt a boost of confidence heading into his preparation for this Sunday's game against the Rams.

"It's huge for me, honestly, to be able to feel all those things and go through a game and experience all those different adversities that go on within an NFL game," Odunze said. "To finally see those things happen is kind of a gradual progression of finally feeling and playing like myself."

The Bears offense really hit their stride in the fourth quarter against the Colts. Williams completed 14 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns in the final 15 minutes. Odunze was responsible for four of those receptions, including a 14-yard connection on third-and-5 and a 1-yard score that brought the Bears within 14-9.

While the Bears ultimately fell short in Indianapolis, Odunze believes the offense's fourth-quarter success can be a springboard for the unit moving forward.

"I think it's just a comfortability and a confidence going out there being in an attacking mindset toward the defense, not waiting to see what they're gonna give us and what they're trying to limit us to do," Odunze said. "But attacking them and understanding that we're a step ahead of them. So, I think it's definitely replicable in the games going forward, and some of that we need to do to continue to have success."

Along with the improved offensive production, Odunze sees the possibility of getting veteran receiver Keenan Allen back in action as a major boost. Allen, who missed the past two games with a heel injury, practiced in a limited capacity Wednesday and Thursday.

"A 12-year vet? The Hall of Famer? Oh man, I couldn't tell you how that's going to help," Odunze joked. "Nah, just playing. It's Keenan Allen. He's going to go out there and provide problems for the defense, tell us different things during the course of the game to help us out and continue to be Keenan Allen, the weapon that he is.

"That's going to provide problems for the defense, not knowing who to guard out there, who to cover, who to emphasize and allow more things to open up."

Even if Allen is able to play Sunday versus the Rams, Odunze will continue to be an integral piece of the offense's success as he and Williams further their on-field connection.

While it took a few games for the draft picks to showcase their chemistry, Odunze believes it's just one chapter in their early careers. For the duo, the focus ultimately remains on using their connection to win games.

"It's a part of our journey, but it's not the end all be all," Odunze said. "It was a great connection that we had on that game, but it wasn't enough to get the W either. It's kind of bittersweet. It's things you can look at and be like, 'yeah, I need to do a little more of that,' and there's things you can look at and say, 'hey, I didn't do that very well,' and things to improve on. So it's a chapter that we'll continue to learn from regardless of it all."

The Bears were back on the practice fields at Halas Hall to continue their preparation for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams at Soldier Field.
