"Meet the Rookies" chronicles the inspirational stories of four of the Bears' newest players. In addition to White, the other rookies featured in the series include center Hroniss Grasu, tackle Tayo Fabuluje and receiver Cameron Meredith.
"Meet the Rookies" is sponsored by Chicago Tribune digitalPLUS. The four segments are being shown on ChicagoBears.com and the Chicago Bears Official Mobile App throughout June.
The segment on White discusses his unique path to the NFL. Without any serious Division I offers out of high school, he enrolled at Lackawanna College in Scranton, Penn. After redshirting as a freshman in 2010, he had to sit out a second season in 2011 after missing a deadline to file financial aid forms.
After playing one season at Lackawanna, White still wasn't receiving much interest. So he sent out 250 emails to college coaches before ultimately landing at West Virginia.
After catching 35 passes for 507 yards and five touchdowns at West Virginia in 2013, White exploded for 109 receptions for 1,447 yards and 10 TDs last season. The 6-3, 215-pounder opened the 2014 season with a school-record seven straight 100-yard games and set another West Virginia mark for most receptions in a game with 16 against Texas.
