Top 10 draft steals
With the NFL draft taking place next Thursday through Saturday, senior writer Larry Mayer ranks the top 10 draft steals in Bears history.

(10) Shaun Gayle, S (10th round in 1984)
Gayle appeared in 144 games with 92 starts over 11 seasons. Before serving as a regular starter from 1989-94, he contributed primarily on special teams.

(9) Roland Harper, FB (17th round in 1975)
A perfect complement to Walter Payton, Harper was an excellent blocker. But he could also run with the ball, gaining a career-high 992 yards in 1978.

(8) Doug Plank, S (12th round in 1975)
A physical, hard-hitting force in the secondary, Plank played all eight of his NFL seasons. The famed "46" defense was named after Plank's jersey number.

(7) Mark Bortz, G (eighth round in 1983)
The two-time Pro Bowler was a converted college defensive tackle who was part of some of the best offensive lines in NFL history with the Bears.

(6) Johnny Morris, WR (12th round in 1958)
Morris remains the Bears' all-time leading receiver with 5,059 yards. He was a key member of the 1963 championship team and was voted All-Pro in 1964.

(5) Joe Fortunato, LB (seventh round in 1952)
Fortunato was voted to five Pro Bowls in 12 seasons with the Bears and was named to the NFL's All-Decade Team for the 1950s.

(4) Harlon Hill, WR (15th round in 1954)
Hill was voted to the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons and remains second on the Bears' all-time receiving list with 4,616 yards and 40 TDs.

(3) Stan Jones, G (fifth round in 1953)
The Hall of Famer was voted to seven straight Pro Bowls and was a member of the 1963 NFL championship team during 12 seasons with the Bears.

(2) Danny Fortmann, G (ninth round in 1936)
The Hall of Famer was named All-NFL six straight years from 1938-43 and helped the Bears win three league championships in four seasons.

(1) Richard Dent, DE (eighth round in 1983)
The Hall of Famer and Super Bowl XX MVP remains the Bears' all-time leader with 124.5 sacks.
