New Bears defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo talks with ChicagoBears.com about his first NFL sack, the person who inspires him the most, his love for the beach and much more.
What's the first thing you think of when you hear Chicago?
The Bears. Walter Payton.
You were born in Brooklyn, raised in Texas, went to college in Tennessee, drafted by Indianapolis. Which place is the most underrated?
It's not really underrated anymore, but Nashville. Everyone knows about Nashville now, but when I was there it was still underrated. The food scene was the best part — especially the hot chicken.
What was your 'Welcome to the NFL' moment?
My biggest 'welcome to the NFL' moment — I wasn't even playing because I was injured when I came in — so watching the first training camp practice, not being able to do anything and when you're the one not wearing any pads, everybody looks way bigger. Everything was super fast, people look huge. I was like, 'wow, there's a lot going on.'
What's an essential part of your gameday fits?
I usually need a good jacket. You gotta have a nice variety — some leather, some work jackets, overcoat.
Do you have any rituals/traditions on gameday?
I walk around the field barefoot when I first get to the stadium. I'm superstitious about it. I started that halfway through my second year in the league.
What's a random fact or hidden talent you have?
I'm a really good cook. I can make whatever, but recently I've been making gnocchi.
Do you remember your first NFL sack?
We were playing Jacksonville my rookie year. It was my second game. We were up one score, and they were driving. I got up the field, swung back, the quarterback tried to step up and me and three-technique hit him at the same time, and I stripped the ball out. We got the ball back and won the game.
Who are you excited to team up with in Chicago?
I'm ready to get back with [defensive line] coach Jeremy Garrett, JG. He was with me at Vandy for a little bit, so it's good to get back around him.
How would you describe your locker room presence?
I like to get in the mix. I like to talk with the guys, see what guys are talking about, get on the hoops, the ping pong tables.
Who inspires you the most?
My mom inspires me the most — to see her work ethic and see her drive. She never has any complaints.
You got a dog during your rookie season. What has he meant to your NFL journey?
My dog, Kola, has been everything to me. I don't know where I'd be without my dog because the amount of emotional support a dog can provide is surprising. It's been great to have him.

What's your favorite way to unwind from football or spend the offseason?
Probably get on the beach, get some sun, toes in the sand. I don't swim but I like to be on the beach. I just like the sand.
What's the best beach you've been to?
There's a beach in Orange County, California, that's my favorite.
Describe your personality in three words?
I'm hardworking, number one. I like to have a good time at the same time. And laid back.
Is there anything in Chicago you're excited to see or do?
Try out some of the good food spots. I'm a big foodie, so I'm open to all types of food. I know Chicago's got a lot of different cultures here.
