The Bears welcomed new offensive coordinator Declan Doyle to Chicago last week. Learn more about the Iowa native and former Broncos tight ends coach as he talks with ChicagoBears.com about his ideal day in Chicago, what's at the top of his bucket list, who has left him starstruck and more.
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Chicago?
Windy City.
You have a free day in Chicago, what do you want to see or do?
I'd love to go see the Cubs play again.
Sounds like we know the answer now, but Cubs or Sox?
Cubs. I grew up around Cubs fans in Iowa, so I'm kind of impartial, but the history behind Wrigley Field is cool.
Chicago-style hot dog or deep dish pizza?
Deep dish pizza. I don't have a favorite spot yet, but I'm excited to figure it out.
What were your sports fandoms growing up?
My whole family is from out east, so I grew up cheering for the New England Patriots. When I went to coach in New Orleans, my parents would still text me about New England and I was like, 'your son coaches in the NFL.' Then for baseball, I grew up a Red Sox fan.
You were born and raised in Iowa – what's a misconception about the state?
That the entire place is just corn. There's two college towns that are pretty cool. I would compare it similarly to a lot of parts of Illinois outside Chicago. And the people are great, just like here.
Best advice you ever received?
Somebody in coaching once told me that your age doesn't matter. Knowledge is power and that's what matters.
What's at the top of your bucket list?
I want to go to the Army-Navy game. I've always watched it as a little kid and I've always enjoyed the pageantry of it. I watch it every year and I think it's something that would be really cool to go see.
Any pregame superstitions or rituals?
I don't have any superstitions, but I have things I do on game day when I get there. I walk out on the field with the call sheet, walk the field by myself and call the game in my head. I've done that since I was in New Orleans as an offensive assistant.
You're a former college baseball player. Who's your favorite MLB player of all-time?
David Ortiz for the Red Sox was my childhood hero growing up.
What's a random fact about you?
I've done something to sweat every day for the last seven years, so I exercise every day no matter what. Even if I've only slept two hours, it's every day, and generally, I run.
Is there anyone you've met that has still left you starstruck?
Drew Brees. I don't feel that way anymore, but the first time I met Drew Brees, I was like 'oh my god.' And same with Sean Payton.
You are a 90s kid. What was your favorite sitcom growing up?
The Office. Awesome show.
If you weren't a coach, what would your dream job be?
I don't have one. This is the dream job.
What words or phrases capture your personality?
Detailed. Hungry. I love people — I love the relationships I get to build.
