The Bears on Thursday re-signed special-teams standout and reserve defensive back Sherrick McManis to a one-year contract.
The longest tenured player on the Bears roster, McManis returns for a ninth season with the team. He was originally acquired on Aug. 31, 2012 in a trade with the Texans in exchange for fullback Tyler Clutts.
McManis has appeared in 108 games with five starts for the Bears, recording 124 tackles, one interception, six pass breakups, one sack and two tackles-for-loss. On special teams, he has registered 74 tackles, one blocked punt that was returned by Corey Wootton for a touchdown, one blocked field goal, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries.
Since 2015, McManis ranks fourth in the NFL with 45 special-teams tackles.
Last season the Northwestern product tied for the Bears' lead with eight special-teams tackles despite being limited to nine games due to injuries.
McManis played sparingly on defense after being moved from cornerback to safety in 2019, but he generated one of the most impressive takeaways of the season when he punched the ball out of Raiders receiver Trevor Davis' hands inside the Bears' 1-yard line in a Week 5 loss to Oakland in London.
