Top 10: Dynamic duos through Bears history
With the Bears honoring the 1960s and the teams led by hall of famers Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers at this Sunday's home game, senior writer Layer Mayer ranks his top 10th dynamic duos in Bears history.

(10) Doug Buffone and Ed O'Bradovich
The linebacker and defensive end played together on the Bears defense for six seasons from 1966-71. Buffone and O'Bradovich remained close after their playing days and became popular with a new generation of Bears fans when they co-hosted a post-game radio show.

(9) Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers
The two running backs joined the Bears together as rookies in 1965 and became close friends and roommates for road games. Their special bond was chronicled in the classic movie "Brian's Song," which was filmed shortly after Piccolo passed away of cancer in 1970 at the age of 26.

(8) Steve McMichael and Dan Hampton
"Danimal" and "Mongo" wreaked havoc together on and off the field for 10 seasons with the Bears from 1981-90. The two helped fuel some of the greatest defenses in NFL history, including the famed 1985 unit. The two have remained close, playing in the Chicago 6 band together along with former Bears teammate Otis Wilson.

(7) Doug Plank and Gary Fencik
The two aggressive hard-hitting safeties were known as "The Hitmen" when they teamed in the Bears secondary from 1976-82. Fencik remains the franchise's all-time leader with 38 interceptions, while Plank was known more for his ability to separate the ball from opposing receivers.

(6) Walter Payton and Matt Suhey
The Hall of Fame tailback and the dependable fullback teamed in the Bears backfield for eight seasons and became close friends. Suhey remained by Payton's side through his illness until he passed away in 1999. Suhey became the executor of Payton's will and continues to act as a father figure to Payton's children.

(5) Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher
The two star linebackers were close friends and longtime teammates who joined forces to wreak havoc on opponents for a decade together. A Hall of Famer who was voted to eight Pro Bowls, Urlacher garnered most of the attention. But Briggs, who was voted to seven Pro Bowls, was a great player as well.

(4) Bronko Nagurski and Red Grange
The two Hall of Fame running backs were Bears teammates for five seasons from 1930-34, helping the franchise win back-to-back NFL championships in 1932 and 1933. In a 9-0 win over the Portsmouth Spartans in the 1932 title game, Nagurski threw a short touchdown pass to Grange in the fourth quarter.

(3) Buddy Ryan and Mike Ditka
The head coach and his defensive coordinator famously clashed throughout their tenure together, but they helped the 1985 Bears cap one of the most dominant seasons in NFL history by winning Super Bowl XX. Ditka and Ryan both were carried off the field on the shoulders of their players after their 46-10 thrashing of the Patriots.

(2) George Halas and Sid Luckman
In the 1940s, the head coach and quarterback helped revolutionize the NFL with the "T" formation and won four league championships in seven seasons in the process. Luckman later served as an assistant coach under Halas and the two remained extremely close until Papa Bear passed away in 1983.

(1) Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus
The two Hall of Famers remain closely linked more than 50 years after they were selected by the Bears with back-to-back picks in the first round of the 1965 draft. Sayers and Butkus developed into once-in-a-generation stars together and even had their numbers retired by the Bears during the same 1994 ceremony.
