Top 10: Scariest hitters in secondary
With Halloween on Saturday, senior writer Larry Mayer ranks the top 10 scariest hitters he's seen play in the Bears secondary.

(10) Chris Harris, safety
Harris was a physical safety in two stints with the Bears from 2005-06 and 2010-11. His signature hit came in a 2010 win over the Cowboys when he blasted receiver Roy Williams on a reception over the middle early in the second quarter, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

(9) Shaun Gayle, safety
A valuable reserve on the 1985 Super Bowl championship team, Gayle emerged as a big hitter as a regular starter with the Bears from 1989-94. His signature hit came in a 1993 win over the Eagles when he blasted tight end Maurice Johnson along the sideline after a reception.

(8) Charles Tillman, cornerback
Tillman was known for his ball skills while playing for the Bears from 2003-14; he holds team records for interceptions by a cornerback (36), defensive touchdowns (9) and forced fumbles (42). But he could also deliver a blow. His favorite hit came in the 2008 season opener when he blasted Colts receiver Reggie Wayne, causing an incompletion.

(7) Dave Duerson, safety
Duerson helped the Bears win Super Bowl XX in 1985 and earned four trips to the Pro Bowl from 1985-88 due in large part to his physical play opposite Gary Fencik at safety. Duerson's signature hit came on a sack of Falcons quarterback David Archer in a 13-10 win in Atlanta in 1986.

(6) Kyle Fuller, cornerback
Fuller combines excellent ball skills with a physicality that's rare at the cornerback position. He's delivered several huge hits since being selected by the Bears in the first round of the 2014 draft, but none has been more impressive than the one he made on Buccaneers running back Ke'Shawn Vaughn Oct. 8 at Soldier Field. Fuller's shoulder slammed into Vaughn's chest, forcing a fumble that the Bears recovered.

(5) Mike Brown, safety
An emotional leader of the Bears defense from 2000-08, Brown was known for his ball skills and overtime interceptions in back-to-back games. He also delivered crushing blows on receivers, but his signature hit came in a 2005 win over the Packers when he de-cleated Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre on a sack, causing a fumble that the Bears recovered.

(4) Mark Carrier, safety
Carrier led the NFL with a Bears-record 10 interceptions as a rookie in 1990. But the USC product was also known for his physicality in the secondary.

(3) Todd Bell, safety
Bell was a devastating hitter with the Bears throughout the 1980s, though he sat out the Super Bowl XX season due to a contract dispute. His signature hit came in a 1984 playoff game in Washington. Bell knocked out running back Joe Washington with a vicious hit on a short reception that resulted in a fumble the Bears recovered and set the tone in a 23-19 upset win.

(2) Gary Fencik, safety
The Ivy League-educated safety remains the Bears' all-time leader with 38 interceptions, but he was known just as much for his physical play that earned him the nickname "The Hitman." Fencik's signature hit came in the 1977 season finale on an icy field at Giants Stadium when he blasted receiver Jimmy Robinson, forcing an incompletion.

(1) Doug Plank, safety
Plank patrolled the Bears secondary alongside fellow safety Gary Fencik from 1975-82, delivering punishing blows on a weekly basis. His signature hit came in a 1980 Monday night shutout of the Buccaneers when he blew up tight end Jimmie Giles, forcing an incomplete pass over the middle.
