Caleb Williams, Rome Odunze just scratching surface as Bears rookies | Quick Hits

The bond between Bears rookies Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze has been evident in their first season as teammates, but the best no doubt is yet to come.

The quarterback and receiver, who played against each other in the Pac-12 at USC and Washington, respectively, teamed up for touchdown passes of 4 and 14 yards in last Sunday's game against the 49ers in San Francisco.

"They're just two young guys that are obviously getting to know each other," said interim offensive coordinator Chris Beatty. "Rome is so quarterback friendly and then Caleb has done a great job. Those guys came in knowing each other from the league they were playing in, and they've got a great rapport with each other.

"You can see their relationship budding throughout the season. That's something that is going to be exciting for Bears fans for a long time."

Williams was selected by the Bears with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Odunze was chosen at No. 9.

The rookie receiver, who has caught 45 passes for 585 yards and three TDs this season, has impressed Beatty with his attention to detail.

"Rome is special in the fact that he's a special player, but he's also a special person," Beatty said. "Everything that you coach, he takes in. If you ever saw his notebook, it looks like a college kid that's in whatever kind of business class or something like that. He takes notes on everything. As a receivers coach, you respect that because he wants to learn from everybody."

Monster numbers

Bears receiver Keenan Allen has been highly productive against the Vikings throughout his 12 NFL seasons. In five career games versus Minnesota, he has caught 56 passes for 631 yards and three touchdowns, an average of 11.2 receptions and 126.2 yards per contest.

Four of the outings came when Allen played for the Chargers. Last year, he established career highs with 18 catches for 215 yards in a 28-24 win in Minnesota. In his first appearance against the Vikings as a member of the Bears a few weeks ago, he caught nine passes for 86 yards and one TD.

"He sees things, and this defense is so complicated with all the different looks that they give you, all the different ways they drop guys in and drop guys out," Beatty said. "Keenan just has a knack for being able to see those things before they happen. A lot of receivers see them as they happen. He can sit back and tell you what's happening before it happens.

"He's always generally a step or a half a step faster than everybody else. Against a defense like this, as good as they are and the vets that they have, you need every little advantage you can get."

Fun venue

Tight end Cole Kmet is looking forward to playing Monday night at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. When Bears President and CEO Kevin Warren served as Vikings chief operating officer, he was instrumental in the design, development and planning of the state-of-the-art facility, which opened in 2016.

"It's loud," Kmet said. "It's my favorite [road] stadium to play in. I love going there. It's a blast to play in. It's a beautiful place to play. I definitely enjoy it, for sure. It feels like you're in a Game of Thrones set or something. I always enjoy it there. It's a lot of fun."

Familiar face

Kmet was thrilled to hear that his alma mater, St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights, has named former Bears kicker Robbie Gould as its head football coach.

"I know everyone's excited at Viator about it," Kmet said. "It'll be cool to see. I'll be rooting Robbie on heavily here. Happy for him, for sure."
