Injury Update: Bears to lean on depth in secondary Sunday

WARE, United Kingdom – The Bears could be down two starting defensive backs Sunday when they face the Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Safety Jaquan Brisker has been ruled out of the game and did not travel with the team to the United Kingdom due to a concussion he suffered in last Sunday's win over the Panthers. Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson is listed as doubtful after being unable to practice Friday with a calf injury he sustained in Thursday's workout.

"It was just a plant, point and drive," said coach Matt Eberflus. "He felt something in his calf. We took him out of practice there. He's been rehabbing it the last so many hours since it happened, and we'll see where it goes."

Elijah Hicks is expected to replace Brisker. Selected by the Bears in the seventh round of the 2022 draft out of California, Hicks has appeared in 37 games with eight starts in three seasons, compiling 68 tackles, one pass breakup, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Six of his starts came last season in place of the injured Eddie Jackson.

Defensive coordinator Eric Washington said that he has "a tremendous level of confidence" in Hicks, adding: "No. 1, he's familiar with what we're doing. He is an active learner, which means that when he is backing up Brisker, he's preparing himself as if he was going to start … With the way he prepares with his skillset, his attention to detail, I have the utmost confidence in him."

If Stevenson is unable to play, he likely would be replaced by Jaylon Jones, who is in his third season with the Bears after joining the team in 2022 as an undrafted free agent from Mississippi. Jones has appeared in 38 games with four starts and recorded 74 tackles, four pass breakups, one forced fumble and one tackle-for-loss.

"He's played for us a bunch and he's one of those guys like Elijah that's been in our system," Eberflus said. "He knows it in and out, and the coaches have been with those guys in the technique and the fundamentals there. They're going to stand on solid ground relative to that, and the other guys trust them too, because they've been in there and produced and have played for us, so we feel good about both [Hicks and Jones]."

Left guard Teven Jenkins is questionable for Sunday's game with an ankle injury he sustained last weekend against the Panthers. He returned to practice on a limited basis Friday after sitting out Thursday's workout.

"Teven did a nice job," Eberflus said. "Today he was limited, but he looked good, and so we're hopeful there. We'll see where that goes for Sunday."

When Jenkins exited the Panthers game, he was replaced by first-year pro Bill Murray, who performed well in what was his Bears debut. Murray spent last season on the Bears practice squad. His only previous NFL regular-season experience came in 2022 when he played three snaps on special teams for the Patriots.

"Bill is someone who has worked hard, and the results paid off right there," said offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. "With the way the scenario played out where we needed Bill to step in at left guard, we were able to pick up right where we left off. It was unfortunate with Teven being out right there, but Bill was able to go in and we were still able to operate our offense. He has done such a good job, from the first day he has been around with his effort and his toughness, and that has also led to his technique and his style of play showing up in games."

Defensive end Jacob Martin, who returned to practice this week for the first time since the start of the season but remains on injured reserve, is also listed as questionable. The Bears have three weeks to reinstate him onto the active roster.

Like Brisker, defensive tackle Zacch Pickens (groin) and cornerback Terell Smith (hip) did not travel to London and have been ruled out of Sunday's game.

The Bears hit the practice fields across the pond this week ahead of their Week 6 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
